Type of a scam Business Email Compromise

The victim was originally contacted through Craigslist and asked to do some freelance transcription work. The first payment for this work was on time. The next payment was late. Then, the scammer offered the victim a full-time job at a base hourly rate with opportunities to earn extra commissions. This was a verbal agreement. After putting in 68-hours providing progress reports, templates and blog content, the victim never received payment and scammer cut off communication. I believe that because the scammer knew of the victim’s financial troubles and because it was a verbal agreement, the scammer believes that the victim will have no recourse. In addition, their website advertising a $5,000 barbecue table is still posted, and this business might be a scam as well.
