Instant VIN Reports

Type of a scam Other

I had a vehicle for sale on the local Craigslist website and was contacted via text message by a person posing as a potential buyer. I had a conversation with this person over several texts before they requested "a IVR report" on the vehicle. I asked what an IVR report was and the person replied with an explanation and a website for a vehicle report service called Instant VIN Reports. This service is similar to CarFax (I only use that for comparison, I am in no way associating CarFax with this scam). I checked out the website through a Google search, I did not click on the link provided. The site was legitimate and I paid $25 for a report on my car to be generated. As soon as I confirmed that I had run the report and tried to send it to the "buyer" all replies to my texts stopped.

The report I received was accurate as to the history of my vehicle, I believe this scam was to simply get me to purchase this service.
