A girl claiming to be Mary McMullen from Marion, Indiana responded to an ad I posted online (http://pub40.bravenet.com/classified/show.php?usernum=3382318336) for subleasing my room. She claimed to be a graduate of Louisiana State University who was moving to the area to study Occupational Therapy. After hearing about the apartment she said she was going to send a check for the deposit. When it arrived it was made out for $3260 more than the deposit, and when I questioned her about this she asked me to deposit the check and wire her the remaining difference. She said her dad sent the check with extra to cover her living expenses. The check also had no person information listed and the routing number didn’t match the bank. When I refused to wire the money she continued to send messages asking me to do so until I blocked the phone number.

I posted an ad online for an apartment sublease (http://pub40.bravenet.com/classified/show.php?usernum=3382318336). I received an e-mail inquiry from someone claiming to be Mary Mcmullen, a graduate of Louisiana State University who was moving to Portland to study occupational therapy. After sending information about the apartment she said she was going to send a check for the deposit. When the check arrived it was made out for over $3000 more than the $300 deposit. It had no person information listed on the check. When I asked for a reason to why the check was made out for so much, she said that her father sent her "allowance" for her car and living expenses, and she asked me to deposit the check and send her the difference. I did not do this, but instead sent her message that I would no longer be able to sublet my apartment and asked what the best address to return her check to was. She did not respond.
