Type of a scam Charity

An organization calling itself "New York American Legion Support, Inc" at PO Box 30330, Rochester, NY 14603, is using the USPS to mail letters soliciting "tax-deductible" contributions of $10 or more. The contact name given in "Terry O Connell" [sic]. This organization has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the American Legion whatsoever. The letter claims: "As the largest Veterans organization in the world, the New York American Legion Support, Inc.is [sic] responsible to our military personnel of [sic] maintaining the following programs: Services to our homeless [sic] veterans, Operation Comfort Warriors (providing amenities like books, phone cards and TV), the Rehabilitation Fund, Disabled Veterans Outreach Centers, Flags at Cemeteries just to name a few. [sic]" My friend received this letter as recently as 10/12/2016. It claims it is a "501C-19" [sic] organization and a copy of its "annual report can be obtained by writing to: The office of the Attorney general Charities Bureau, [sic] 120 Broadway, New York, New York 10271." This phony organization also uses the American Legion’s copyrighted emblem on its heading and as a watermark on the form letter. Of course, there is no phone number, no street address and no website for these scammers. These disreputable and despicable con-men sully the good and respected name of the American Legion and all we stand for.
