Was initially contacted by someone names Macy who asked me to come in for an interview and told me to bring my resume, ID, and $110 for “training certification”. Figured that was strange considering how there is no requirement for certification in NY for bartenders, and saw on Yelp that other people have been scammed out of their money. Also there is a copy of an employment contract on Yelp that is clearly illegal, stating that someone must complete two full weeks of work before receiving any pay when NYS law requires payment for any amount of work.

Had a craigslist ad for Bartender/Barback/Server, no experience needed. Sent my resume a few months ago, and received a call recently. Asked me my name and number, and the kind of experience I had. Then he proceeded to tell me where to go for an interview, and what to bring, including an 85 dollar cash or check deposit for a licensing class. To my knowledge, there is no such thing as a serving license (food handler and/or liquor permit is different, and something you either pay for to get on your own, or a company would reimburse you). One should NEVER have to pay upfront when getting a job, let alone interviewing. When I tried asking specific questions about who they were, what they do, what kind of license am I paying for, etc, they were very vague and rehearsed in their answers.
