Total money lost $2,287

Type of a scam Government Grant

I received a text from a former co-worker through Facebook messenger who asked if I was aware of a program that awarded grants to persons who were looking to start their own business, or receive money to pay down debts, etc. My former co-worker, gave a testimonial of how she received a $500,000 grant from the United Nations Human Rights Program, and outlined details relating to how I could also apply for this grant. I was then given the link to apply for the grant. I was also fed the line by the person posing as my friend that Patrick Thomas was such an upstanding Christian, and that I would also have to pay a small fee in order to process the grant. After contacting the scammer, he gave details about how I could apply for UNHRP grant, even outlining specific dollar amounts I could apply for. I was sent further details by text through FB messenger. As the texting progressed, I unwitting exchanged information with the person (copy of dr’s license) and even sent the spammer cash in the amount of $1000.00, only for the spammer to turn around and ask for additional funds after they attended a board meeting which then they agreed to send an amount I asked for. I then was asked to pay for taxes and clearance fee of $4960.00 and that is when I started questioning the scammer about why are you charging me all of these fees and the scammer stated this was to release the check for the grant. I then sent another $1287.00, which I was very uncomfortable doing but did it anyway. I then asked what is the cancellation fee and was told that is was $750.00 but I would be charged a delivery fee to cancel the grant. The scammer then stated that I should work out a payment plan if I didn’t have the whole amount of $4960.00 and once it was paid then the check would be delivered to me via Fedex. As of today, I got a text through messenger from the scammer stating that my former co-worker’s FB account got hacked and she will send me a new message through messenger and to be sure that I block the previous message and don’t respond to any messages from her old account. PLEASE BEWARE OF THIS SCAM ON FACEBOOK, I am usually a good judge of character of this sort of thing but with all the craziness that is going on in the world these days, I let my guard down, never again. I definitely learned from this incident.
