Type of a scam Family/Friend Emergency

grandchild in trouble and held after a car accident at the US Embassy. Child asked us to send $9800 immediately and he would then be allowed to return to the US. There was 1 1/2 lb of marijuana in the car he was driving but he drug tested clean and the money was needed to secure his release. After he was released the money would be returned to him?? When we asked for written confirmation that the money would be returned the phone went dead. Person posing as grandchild had first asked us to promise not to tell anyone about this. We phoned our grandchild who was at home. Person phoning knew a lot about us and our grandchild that we thought was personal. The giveaway was his accent.

Stated nephew was .5 percent over alcohol limit but not charged..person sounded like my nephew and knew family information . i wired exact amount by western union.. Not hearing from my nephew i called him today (03/26/2016) and he was in Onterio Canada had knew nothing about about the scam.
