Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

An email appeared to come from the university I attend, offering an opportunity to be paid to be a secret shopper. Then the text messaging from a different man began, followed by a letter through the mail with 3 cashiers checks for $980 each and instructions to purchase 2 apple gift cards after depositing the checks and waiting for them to clear. The letter then states that you should contact the company once you have purchased the gift cards but it also warns you not to send any money or merchandise as it will be picked up by a verified agency representative.

Received message via LinkedIn with secret shopper opportunity. Asked to go to a website to fill out a form for screening – form only asked for email, address, name, and phone numbers. Received a text message a week after asking if Apple store or Best Buy we’re close by for first assignment. Received a check for $2,900 a week after asking to purchase $2600 in Apple gift cards, text when done so a verified agent can pick up the merchandise.

I almost got caught in one until read the note and received and email. The most off-putting detail in the note was "Do not disclose this information with anyone, and be discrete while performing this task as to not arouse any suspicion".
