Type of a scam Home Improvement

I have had this man and his wife do other painting projects over the past 3 – 4 years without any problems. On June 17, we had a verbal agreement to do exterior painting for gutters, downspouts, garage doors, trim and rear decking.

The total cost of the job was $2200.00, requiring half down for expenses and supplies. We have contacted him via cell phone. The actual painting was to start on Tuesday, June 21. They were a no call, no show. We called the cell number. A few days later we received a call from this man stating he had several rib injury and had been seen in the ER. He would not be able to start for a week or so. A week went by, again no call no show. Called the cell number again, left a message. He returned a call a few days later promising to start the job after July 4th. Again no call no show. We called every day starting July 12, leaving messages. No response, no call backs, no show to do the work agreed upon. We are now filing in the Clackamas County Court a Small Claims for the return of our $1100.00.

Please advise others of this scam.
