Type of a scam Tech Support

Call came from "Online Update" (631-318-7105) shortly after I updated my Windows software and told me that my computer was filled with viruses and malware, and it needed to be cleaned immediately. They told me they were Windows support. I stupidly thought Windows/Microsoft was calling in response to the update. They claimed remote access of the computer and tried to prove that the computer was infected. Then they wanted to load all sorts of security software to remove the unwanted viruses/malware/hackers and secure the computer. Once they were in the computer, I couldn’t get them to leave without me agreeing for them to load the software, threatening that the computer would crash without their help. They did agree that I wouldn’t have to pay them until I saw that the computer was safe and the software was what they claimed to be. I could pay by mailing a check after I was satisfied. Well, of course it was a scam. I had to take my computer to a reputable repair place to have the software removed and their backdoor shut. Meanwhile, they continue to call and harass me for the money they say I owe for the software they put onto the computer. I’ve also received a letter, supposedly from a Civil Law firm, accusing me of civil theft and threatening to pursue legal action, although the law firm doesn’t seem to exist (Scholes & Associates); and the letter appears far from legit. Don’t get suckered in.
